When John was first diagnosed with cancer his publicist recommended he keep it quite and not discuss it openly. John Wayne did just the opposite and came out fighting cancer head on. He let everyone know that he was diagnosed with cancer and made sure to do anything he could to fight it. Sadly cancer took his life in 1979 but he asked his kids to use his name and legacy to fight it. Here we are 44 years later and 200 sponsored fellowships, and 100,000 people per year treated under the umbrella of John Wayne's Legacy.
